Self-efficacy and Courage Autoeficacia y Coraje

Aprende de los errores, ríete y sigue aprendiendo

I want to create an entire post about how important your opinion of your own ability to reach your language learning goal is; it is extremely important. Building yourself up, motivating yourself, speaking words of encouragement to  yourself is important, because you have to be your own best friend to keep going in this journey.

No one is going to make you study and practice. You have to hold yourself accountable for making progress towards your language learning goals. You have to really believe that you can do it. Sí, se puede. It takes time to develop this resilient mindset. I, for one, was insecure about my own abilities and that has been a barrier to break down over the years. I’m still working on it.

Courage builds confidence which leads to greater self-efficacy. I realize, in a challenge as great as learning another language, you are going to make plenty of mistakes. The best way to get over them is to learn from the mistakes, laugh it off, and keep learning.

The more times that I have stepped out of my comfort zone the more I have grown. Uncomfortable experiences can sometimes be the best learning experiences. You are going to feel incredibly uncomfortable at times when you try to speak to native speakers and fumble over your words or just can’t think of the right words to say to express what you want to in Spanish. It is not a great feeling at the time but in the long run it is exactly what you need to learn.

It will get super frustrating at times but you have to remind yourself that it is all good. You have time to make mistakes and learn. I call this an ongoing journey because that is what it is. It is not just a walk in the park or a sprint. From experience, I don’t believe you can get to a conversational level in three months or some crazy short time span like that.  It can take years to get to a level where you feel comfortable expressing yourself fully in another language. If it was easier than everyone would be doing it, and monolingualism would be a thing of the past.

Últimos pensamientos: Mistakes are not always a horrible thing to avoid. Instead, try welcoming it because it means that you have the courage to make mistakes and learn from them in the first place. You´ll soon discover that it is not so bad. There’s always room for improvement. Have that growth mindset. Keep believing in your ability to make progress towards  your learning goal.

Con una sonrisa,

Rosa Janelle
