About me

¡Bienvenido a mi blog!

Hi there!

My name is Janelle and the Spanish name that I have chosen is Rosa. You can call me by either name. As you may know, I’ve dedicated my life (well, at least the next few years) to learn Spanish as a second language. I started this blog the summer of 2020, when the world came to it’s knees due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, as a way to find community of other adult language learners as I restarted learning Spanish on my own. Learning Spanish was my 2020 new year’s resolution and I wasn’t about to let a pandemic thwart my efforts. My goal with this blog is to share my journey learning languages and inspire others to take part in their own language learning journeys, because, as the Jack Johnson song goes: it’s always better when we’re together. This life is limited, so, let’s connect with other people through language and experience while we have this moment.

I know it’s no easy journey that we have embarked upon. Some people have given up on their goals to learn a second language. Okay, let’s be honest, tons of people have given up. I was once in that group, so, I truly understand how it feels to be at a lost on how to attain any kind of fluency. I’ve completed four French classes during high school while mispronouncing the word “cahier” every single time I had to say the French word for “notebook” in class and I, along with other students, couldn’t understand the listening portion of any test. I saw glimmers of hope whenever I understood a few bits and pieces. In the United States, I would say it’s the overwhelming majority of people that have taken language classes in high school or college but fell short at actually learning to effectively communicate in their target language. We have similar stories that ultimately end with, “Oh, umm, well, I took a few Spanish classes way back in high school. It just didn’t stick so I don’t remember much.” I bet many of us have been there, said that, experienced some discouragement.

Hey! It’s a new day with new opportunities, and we’re here on this language journey together. Rekindling an old goal and just taking one baby step at a time is enough. You are enough! Sometimes I need to tell myself that especially when I get so caught up in trying to learn Spanish as quickly or efficiently as possible that I start feeling burnt out and guilty for not achieving more. Let’s give ourselves the credit that we deserve and leave out nagging Mr. Criticism. We’re a rare breed…a sort of unicorn who is crazy enough to stick with our goals of learning Spanish, French, Chinese, Polish, Korean. etc. We can and we will learn.

About a year and a half into my language learning journey I kinda feel like it’s one of my callings to bring people together through language. I’ve been slowly inching towards embarking on this journey for years and now that I’m on this path it feels right. I’m so grateful to be part of a global community and foster greater connection, empathy, and understanding.

Currently, I can speak conversational Spanish with some errors. I estimate my level at a solid B1. I’m also dabbling in a few other languages including Korean and French. I hope to encourage you to join me on this long, crazy path to fluency. ¡Fluidez aquí vamos!

Con una sonrisa,

Rosa Janelle
